During the regeneration process, the resin bed becomes saturated with calcium and magnesium ions and requires regeneration to maintain efficiency. Water softener salt plays a critical role here. A brine solution, or saltwater, is flushed through the resin bed during regeneration. The high concentration of sodium chloride in the brine solution displaces the accumulated calcium and magnesium ions from the resin beads. These ions, along with excess brine, are then flushed out of the system, leaving the resin bed replenished with sodium ions, ready to continue softening incoming hard water.
